Francis J. The family of Francis J. (Frank) Bergen sadly announces the passing of their beloved husband, father, and grandfather on Nov. 4, 2013 at the age of 82. Born and raised in Paterson, NJ, he was a resident of Glen Rock, NJ for 43 years.
Frank was a 30-year veteran of the Paterson Fire Dept. He retired in 1983. As a dedicated fire fighter, he fought many of Paterson's worst fires valiantly, saving lives and property. In spite of many injuries through the years, he often said, "I love my job." On retirement, he spoke about how his vast fire fighting knowledge and experience, and his regret at leaving it behind.
Frank was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He served with the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, reaching the rank of Sergeant. He also served with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean, and later in the Korean War for which he received the Korean Service Medal, the Navy Occupation Service Medal and the United Nations Medal. Frank took great pride in his Marine Corps service.
He was a member of the Marine Corps League, American Legion Post 145 in Glen Rock, and the Fair Lawn Athletic Club.
Frank was proud of his family, and he was happiest when he was with his children and grandchildren. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Adele D. Bergen; daughters Kathleen of Atlanta, GA and Jane of Ridgewood; sons James of Glen Rock and William of Hawthorne. He was a loving grandfather to Kyle Van Vliet, Kevin Bergen, and KayLinda Bergen. He also is survived by his sister, Charlotte Kehoe of Lambertville, MI; and his brother, Thomas, of Wayne, NJ. He was predeceased by his daughter, Paula, and his parents, Frank and Balbina Bergen.
Funeral will be departing at 9 AM on Friday, November 8, 2013 from the Browning-Forshay Funeral Home, 557 Lafayette Avenue, Hawthorne for a 9:30 AM Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church, Ridgewood, NJ. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Paterson. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM.
