Gene W., 82, of Pompton Plains, formerly of Delaware and North Haledon, died May 7, 2013.
Born in Clifton, Gene was the son of Peter J. and Josephine Russo. Following high school, Gene served with the Marines during the Korean Conflict. He was awarded a Purple Heart for his bravery during combat.
Marrying Marlene Martel, the couple settled in North Haledon, where they raised three children. Gene spent his career working as a Process Engineer for Honeywell in Teterboro until retiring in the early 1990s. Following retirement, he and Marlene spent 12 years in Delaware before moving back to New Jersey in 2003.
Gene was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.
He is lovingly survived by his wife of 61 years, Marlene; his children, William Gene Russo and his wife Margie, Gail Zona and her husband Jeff, and Michelle Cilibrasi and her husband Anthony; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held Friday, May 10 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, Pompton Plains. Cremation will be private. A memorial service will be held 1 PM Saturday, May 11th at Cedar Crest Chapel, 1 Cedar Crest Drive, Pompton Plains, NJ 973-831-3500. All are invited.
