George, 89, of Clifton, died suddenly on May 6, 2014. Born in Paterson, he resided in Clifton for the past 70 years. George was owner of the Iconic Ace & George's Market known and loved by Clifton residents since 1946. He is a WWII US Army veteran who fought in the Battle of the Bulge and D-Day. A highlight of his service was saluting General George Patton as he passed by in a tank saluting the troops. George is a member of the John Raad America Legion Post # 438 in Paterson. He was also an avid Yankees and Giants fan. George is predeceased by his wife, Margaret (Sanderse), by three brothers, Kaiser, William and Frederick Balkjy and by a sister, Julia Fattal. He is survived by a son, George F. Balkjy and wife, Laura, and by a daughter, Maureen Brown and husband, Gary all of Clifton, by three grandchildren, Alicia, Alexis and George F. Balkjy Jr., by two step-grandsons, Gary Brown and Christopher Ball, by two sisters, Elizabeth Hayek of Newton and Margaret Samra of Ledgewood and by many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will begin 9:15 AM Saturday at Allwood Funeral Home, 660 Allwood Road, Clifton, NJ 07012 with a 10 AM Mass at St. Andrew RC Church. Entombment will follow at East Ridgelawn Cemetery. Visiting hours are Friday 5-9 PM.
