A memorial service for former township resident Gertrude Halstead will be held Sunday, Nov. 18, from 2 to 5 p.m., at Assumption College, Hagan Center Hall, 500 Salisbury St., Worcester, Mass.
Mrs. Halstead, 96, died Oct. 10 at home in Pittsfield, Mass.
She was born in July 1916 in Bensheim, Germany and married her husband Walter Halstead in August 1941 in New York.
As a mentor and teacher, Mrs. Halstead worked and volunteered with pre-school children, the poor, the elderly and the dying.
In her 50s, she began writing poetry. Her first chapbook and first book of poetry were published when she was in her nineties. At age 91, she became the first Poet Laureate of Worcester. She was also a featured poet at various poetry readings in New Jersey.
Mrs. Halstead is survived by two daughters, Alice and Celia.
Donations may be made in her memory to organizations supporting the arts, the environment, the homeless, immigrants or refugees.
