A service for former township resident Dr. Gilbert R. Sugarman was held Oct. 20 at Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel in Livingston.
Dr. Sugarman, 87, died |Oct. 17.
Born in New York, Dr. Sugarman was a 50-year resident of the township, prior to moving to Boynton Beach, Fla. He also maintained a residence in Delray Beach, Fla.
Dr. Sugarman served as |captain in the U.S. Army as a consultant to Com Z U.S. Army in Europe in obstetrics and gynecology. He was an obstetrician-gynecologist on the medical staffs at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Newark, Beth Israel Medical Center in New York and Overlook Medical Center in Summit. He was former clinical chief of the St. Barnabas obstetrical-gynecological department and president of the New Jersey Obstetrical-and Gynecological Society.
He was an active proponent of care for the needy, helping to start medical clinics, and ran |the ob-gyn clinic at Overlook Medical Center for several years.
Dr. Sugarman was active at Congregation B'nai Israel in Millburn, where he served on the board and was a past president.
Dr. Sugarman was predeceased by his late wife, Doris and is survived by his current wife, Marjorie. He is also survived by two daughters, Beth Hersh of Springfield and Jill of West Orange; and two grandchildren.
