HO-HO-KUS — Grace W. DeGraaf, 98, died on April 29.

She was born on Ackerman Avenue in Glen Rock to Louise Ackerman and Frank Waldon, former mayor of Glen Rock. She is descended from Jacob Ackerman, a settler in the 1600s in Bergen County. She married Philip DeGraaf in 1975 and moved from Glen Rock to Ho-Ho-Kus. After graduating from Ridgewood High School in 1932, she finished teacher training at Glassboro Normal School and completed a bachelor's degree from William Paterson University. In addition, she has an M.A. degree from New York University and a professional diploma from Teachers College, Columbia University. She was an elementary teacher (22 years) and subsequently the reading consultant for the Glen Rock Schools (17 years). She retired in 1975 after 39 years. She traveled extensively and had a volunteer in numerous local civic and professional organizations.

She is survived by her nieces, Sandra Johanson of Convent Station and Judith Martin of Asheville, N.C.; her grand-nephew and grand-niece, Christopher Johanson of Bowling Green, Ky. and Karin Johanson of Morristown; her stepsons, David DeGraaf of Hendersonville, N.C. and Robert DeGraaf of Acqualoreto, Italy; and her four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren from the DeGraaf family.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 3 at the Glen Rock Community Church, where she was a member since birth. Burial will be private.

Arrangements were by C.C. Van Emburgh Funeral Home in Ridgewood.
