MATHIS
Kenneth Frederick, 80, of Brick, formerly of Hasbrouck Heights passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at Ocean Medical Center in Brick. Mr. Mathis was born on June 12, 1933 to Carolyn and Frederick Mathis in Nutley. He proudly served his country in the US Navy from 1953 to 1955. He was a member of the BPOE Lodge #1698 in Point Pleasant.
Ken had a stellar career at NJ Bell/AT&T for over 36 years. He sold the first 911 Emergency Call Systems in the State of New Jersey. After retiring from AT&T, not one to sit around, Ken embarked on a second career as Tax Assessor for the Township of Brick for 10 years.
He was also civic minded and served 12 years as Councilman in Hasbrouck Heights before moving to Brick.
His memory lives on through all of the photos he graciously and generously took, developed and gave to hundreds of athletes of Hasbrouck Heights High School.
Ken is survived by his wife of 59 years, Kathleen M. nee Flanagan; his children, Kenneth Mathis and his partner Debbie Walling of Toms River, Gregory Mathis and his wife Gina of Park Ridge, Margaret "Peggy" Tattoli and her husband Frank of Point Pleasant; his grandchildren, Rose Mathis of NYC, NY, and Kyle Mathis of Park Ridge; as well as his nephews, Robert Flanagan of Ship Bottom, Brian Flanagan of Port Monmouth and John Flanagan of Toms River.
Mr. Mathis was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Carolyn Mathis formerly of River Edge and by his sister Patricia Kim formerly of Washington Township.
Visiting will be on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the O'Brien Funeral Home 505 Burnt Tavern Road, Brick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday 9:30 AM at St. Martha's R.C.
