Obituary Condolences

A service for township resident Peter J. Mackersie was held Nov. 26 at the Bradley Smith & Smith Funeral Home in Springfield.

Mr. Mackersie, 81, died Nov. 16 at home.

Born in Detroit, Mich., Mr. Mackersie was a resident of Short Hills for more than 42 years.

He graduated from the Cranbrook School in Bloomfield, Mich., and received a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering from Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich.

Mr. Mackersie served in the Army during the Korean War as a radar technician.

He joined Western Electric Co. in 1957, doing programming for its first computer installation at the Hawthorne Works in Cicero, Ill. In 1962, he moved east to work at Western Electric headquarters in New York, doing computer application studies. He went to Cooperstown, N.Y., in 1967, where he was in charge of a computer center for the AT and T Long Lines School.

In 1973, Mr. Mackersie returned to the New York-New Jersey area, where he worked for various Bell System companies doing work in computer development and maintaining software operating systems used by the telephone companies. He retired in 1998 as a manager of software engineering and services for AT and T Network Systems in Liberty.

Mr. Mackersie was a member of the Maplewood Glee Club since 1973, serving in many capacities, including president, treasurer and scholarship chairman.

For 40 years he and his wife were members of the Summit College Club Couples Gourmet Group.

Mr. Mackersie is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; a son, David; a daughter, Heather Trumpore; and five grandchildren.
