Philip J. passed away on Nov. 3, 2012. Born in NYC, NY on Dec. 28, 1922, he enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and served proudly during WWII for 6 years. After a distinguished Naval career he and his beloved wife Mary moved their young family to Hillsdale, NJ where he would continue public service by joining the HPD.
He rose quickly through the ranks. Appointed Hillsdale Police Chief in 1969, he would serve until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of the International Police Chiefs Association, the Bergen County Police Chiefs, the NJ Honor Legion, the VFW and the Westwood Elks.
Phil and Mary retired to Tarpon Springs, FL where he enjoyed golf, bowling, and painting. They had been married for sixty years at the time of her death.
He is survived by his daughter Fran Powell, son, Phil Varisco Jr., five grandchildren, Andrew Powell, Lee Powell, Matthew Varisco, Ross Varisco, Lindsey Varisco, and four great-grandchildren.
His service to country and community, plus his dedication to family and friends will be celebrated on Friday, November 30, 2012 at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Road, Westwood, NJ from 4-8 PM. Funeral Liturgy at St. John the Baptist Church, Hillsdale, NJ on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at 9:30 AM. Interment, Cemetery of the Ascension, Airmont, NY.
