CLAUSEN
Ralph Theodore, 93, a 60 year resident of Tenafly, passed away on April 21, 2014. He was born in Lake Forest, Illinois on May 29, 1920, and graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in marketing. Ralph served in the US Army during World War II, and then joined the Media Research Division of A.C. Nielsen Company in 1945. He was transferred from their Chicago headquarters to New York City in 1948 to head up the Presentation Analysis group. He excelled in Client Service and soon was promoted to Vice President in the Client Services Division, where he provided media market research - Nielsen Ratings - to major corporate advertisers, ad agencies and TV networks.
Ralph and his wife the former Mariana (Nan) Nelson raised their children in Tenafly, and after retiring in 1982 spent a good part of 20 years travelling the world as well as serving with International Executive Service Corps., a not-for-profit organization that recruits and assigns US volunteer experts to assist businesses in developing and emerging market countries worldwide. Nan and Ralph lived in Panama for a couple of months, and later lived in Karachi for 4 years while he was the IESC country director for Pakistan. Their travels included safari in Kenya, the Great Pyramids in Egypt, the Taj Mahal and the Great Wall of China.
A member of the Presbyterian Church at Tenafly since 1950, Ralph was active as a deacon and an elder, and served on the Finance Committee.
Ralph was predeceased by his beloved wife Nan, his son Peter and his son-in-law Graham C. Young. He is survived by his loving daughter Christina and granddaughter Erika Clausen.
A memorial service will be held in the Chapel at the Presbyterian Church at Tenafly, at 55 Magnolia Avenue, on Saturday April 26, 2014 at 11 AM. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given to the Visiting Nurse Association Englewood Hospice (15 Engle Street, Suite 301, Englewood, NJ 07631).
