BRAYTON
Richard A., age 99.10 years of age, died April 5, 2013, in hospice at the Bridgeport Hospital, Bridgeport, Ct. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be remembered first for his dedication to family, country, flag and the love of the outdoors. Born in Fall River, Massachusetts, he was one of nine children of William and Mary Brayton, all of whom predeceased him. Richard graduated from the Hill School and Harvard University, class of 1937. He served in the US Army 1942 to 1945 and was discharged as a captain. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service. Professionally, he worked in the marine insurance field and retired from Crum and Forster in 1979. Jean Cameron Rose of Sewickley, Pennsylvania, captured Richard's heart, and, in 1943, they were married. After the war, they made their home in Short Hills, New Jersey and spent summers on Walloon Lake, Michigan. He served as past president of the Family and Child Guidance Center in South Orange, New Jersey, and was active in the recycling efforts in Millburn Township. He and Jean were members of the Short Hills Club and the Walloon Lake Country Club, which they referred to as a "club in the country." His passion was collecting and flying of various flags, the favorites being "Don't Tread On Me" and the New England Flag, as well as the Stars and Stripes. He had over 50 flags in his collection. At age 92, he moved to The Watermark, in Bridgeport, Ct. to be closer to his son, Roy Brayton and his partner Michael Sullivan of Westport, Ct. He is also survived by his loving daughter and granddaughters, Mary A. Brayton of Palo Alto, California, Laurel A. Haslam of San Francisco, California, and Julia H. Styles, her husband James Styles III, great-grand-daughter, Mia Rose Styles of Phoenix, Arizona and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Jacqueline Hunter and Monica Rowe for their special care of Richard. Celebration of life memorials will be held at The Watermark 3030, Bridgeport, CT May 1, at 11 AM and in Fall River, MA, June 22, at 11:30 AM at the First Congregational Church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Brayton Excellence in History Program, Lawrence University Office of Development, 711 East Boldt Way, Appleton, WI 54911 or the Cora Hartshorn Arboretum, 324 Forest Drive South, Short Hills, NJ 07078.
