Robert E., 87, Retired Publisher, a long time resident of Saddle River, NJ died Sunday, March 24th 2013 of natural causes at his home in Saddle River. He was 87.
Mr. Noyes was born June 22, 1925 to Clarence and Edith Ladomus Noyes. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, the former Mariel Jones.
Mr. Noyes was a graduate of Pearl River High School in Rockland County NY at the age of 16. He graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering after only three years at Northwestern University in 1944. He was a WWII veteran and was an Ensign in the Navy from 1943 to 1946, serving in the Pacific and helped relocate refugees in the Philippines. He was in the US Naval Reserve from 1946 to 1954.
Mr. Noyes owned a publishing company, the Noyes Data Corporation from 1962 until 1997. The company was located on Mill Pond in Park Ridge, NJ, and specialized in publishing technical books for the chemical industry.
Mr. Noyes was a man of far ranging interests and talents. He traveled the world extensively, wrote books, collected fine art and antiques, opened an art gallery in Manhattan, taught himself French and Greek, became a naval historian, piloted gliders, and was an accomplished sailor. He loved being on the water sailing his sloop and in later years, piloting his classic wooden motorboat, "The Becky I and II" respectively with friends and family. He was a former member of the Indian Harbor Yacht Club in Greenwich CT, the Chatham Yacht Club in MA and the New York Yacht Club. He was a summer resident of North Chatham MA for many years and enjoyed sailing with his family on Pleasant Bay.
He was a prolific philanthropist supporting numerous causes related primarily to the environment, education and children, and did so in an unheralded and private manner. He continued to actively read and write on multitude of subjects well into his retirement.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Noyes is survived by his devoted children, son Keith Noyes of Blauvelt, NY, son Steven Noyes of Sterling, MA, son Mark Noyes of Dunedin, FL, son Geoffrey Noyes of Munich, Germany, daughter Rebecca Tower of San Francisco, CA, son Robert Noyes of Boulder, CO, daughter Carolyn Cryan of Tarrytown, NY, daughter Tara Cryan Dougherty of Bronxville, NY, 12 grandchildren and one brother Edward Noyes of Leesburg, FL. Mr. Noyes was predeceased by sister Marilyn Voll and brother Keith Noyes.
The family would like to extend its sincere gratitude and love to Mrs. Debbie Urciuoli, who was a source of support and friendship to Mr. Noyes in recent years.
His keen intelligence and gentle manner will be missed by all who knew him.
Viewing 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at Robert Spearing Funeral Home, Inc., 155 Kinderkamack Road, Park Ridge, NJ with Funeral Service to follow at 1 PM at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Montvale, NJ.
Interment is private on Monday.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the in memory of Robert E. Noyes.
