Stephen A., 67 of Dumont, NJ passed peacefully at home with his family at his bedside on Wednesday, May 23, 2012. He was born in Brooklyn, NY and grew up in Amityville, NY. He served 30 years in the US Navy and Navy Reserve. During his time in service he received two Navy Achievement Awards for creating an important national security database for personal computers. He worked at CBS television network for 21 years as a pool audio engineer. He worked at ABC television network as an Emmy award-winning Senior Systems Engineer for the past 22 years. He also worked for the NFL as a Game Day Frequency Coordinator assigned to the New York Jets. In addition to his work, he volunteered as the Communications Director for the ING NYC Marathon and Half Marathon, NYC Triathlon, and the ING Miami Marathon. He was also active in his local community. He was on the National Board of the American Radio Relay League for 21 years. He was the current president of the Bergen Amateur Radio Association, and served in a leadership capacity over the years for the North Jersey DX Association and the Long Island Radio Association.
Mr. Mendelsohn is survived by his wife, Heidi, his children Janet Mendelsohn, Mark Matsen, Michelle Westgate, Lesa Minckler, Joseph Rodriguez, and Scott Mendelsohn, his sister Lenore Maletta, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will take place at Basralian Funeral Service, 559 Kinderkamack Road, Oradell, NJ 07649, on Friday, May 25th from 2-4 PM; Saturday, May 26th from 6-8 PM; and the funeral service will be on Sunday, May 27th at 2 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The Lustgarten Foundation, a pancreatic cancer research non-profit, 1111 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage, NY 11714.
