Thomas Paul, 69, of Washington Township passed away peacefully on Tuesday July 22, 2014 in Valley Hospital with his wife and son by his side.
Thomas was born in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn on January 29, 1945. Thomas moved with his parents, Tom and Rose and his sister Patricia to Washington Township in 1955. He was a graduate of Don Bosco High School. After graduation he worked as a bank teller.
In 1965 Thomas enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. In 1967 he became a police officer in Washington Township rising to the rank of Sergeant before his retirement in 1996.
During his 28 years as a police officer he received numerous commendations and lifesaving awards. One of the highlights of his career was finding the murder weapon which lead to the apprehension of Kim Montalaro's killer.
In 1976, Thomas received an Associates Degree in Police Science. He was very active in the P.B.A local 206 and was P.B.A. N.J. State Delegate from 1973 to 1976. He was also a member of New Jersey State Honor Legion.
After retiring from the police force, Thomas began a second career for 14 years as a bus driver for Scholastic and the Ridgewood Y.W.C.A.
Thomas was very active in the Townships Little League and soccer programs and coached for many years. He also helped mentor boys as Scout Master of Troop 321. This humble man enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. Above all, he will be remembered as a devoted husband and father.
Thomas is predeceased by his parents Tom and Rose. He is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Kathleen and devoted son Thomas James, his sister Patricia Parsells and her husband George, of Washington Township, his nephew Richard Parsells and his wife Anne, and niece Roseann Waterhouse and her husband Scott of MA.
Family will receive friends on Friday July 25, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Vander Plaat Memorial Home 113 South Farview Avenue, Paramus. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday July 26, 2014 at 10 AM at St. John the Baptist R.C. Church, 69 Valley Street, Hillsdale. Interment Cold Spring Cemetery, Cold Spring, New York.
