Bob Smith February 28, 1928 - July 13, 2013 Mystic - Robert Russell Smith, aka "Bob" resident of Stoneridge in Mystic, died on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at L&M hospital. Bob was born on February 28, 1928 in Norwich to parents Clara Hall Smith & Frank Russell Smith. Bob was a long time resident of Gales Ferry, where he was president of the Gales Ferry Fire District and a Justice of the Peace for 41 years. He spent summers at Groton Long Point and became a full time resident in 2000 before moving to Stoneridge in 2008. Bob attended the Hill School in P.A. in 1947 and later graduated from the Proctor Academy. He enlisted in the Air Force and served his duty in the Korean War. Bob spent four years in Germany and was discharged from the Air Force in 1954. He attended Mitchell College in New London. He graduated from the General Motors Institute and was employed by Mallon Chevrolet where he celebrated 33 years, being named Legion of Leaders Top Salesman numerous times. Bob Smith had many loyal customers, one of his favorites was the Maplesden family from Norwich. Jane Maplesden later became his favorite daughter in law. Admired most for his honesty, charisma, humor and knowledge of cars, he much loved boating, gardening, friends and family. Bob's favorite boating spot while boating in TYCA 1,2,3 or 4, was West Harbor, Fisher's Island. Bob was a charter life member of the Mystic Aquarium, and the Mashantucket Museum. He was a life member of the Norwich American Legion, the L.A.M.B.'s, the Tuckerbung OD's, and the Gales Ferry and Groton Long Point Yacht Clubs. Bob met the love of his life on a blind date and soon married Gertrude Boer Lawson on September 3, 1955. He is survived by Gertrude and their children Lyn M. Lawson of East Hampton, CT. F. Russell Smith II and and his wife Jane Maplesden Smith of Ledyard, and Liz Smith of Gales Ferry, CT. His grandchildren, Hillery, Chelsea, Kathryn, Allison, Rik and Julia and great grandson Dylan Errett. Bob is also survived by his brother Holman H. Smith and is predeceased by his brother Richmond H. Smith. A private family Graveside Service will be held at the Gales Ferry Cemetery with full Military Honors. A Celebration of Bob's Life will be held at The Boathouse Restaurant in Mystic beginning at 12:30 P.M. on Thursday July 18, 2013. We invite all friends and family to join us at the restaurant in celebrating Bobs' life. The family would like to thank the staff at the Cottage and Avalon for their kindness and care for Bob.
