Charles E. Smith Sr. January 23, 1924 - November 1, 2013 Norwich - Charles E. Smith Sr. 89, of Norwich died early Friday morning at the Norwichtown Rehab and Care Center. He was born in Holiday's Cove, West VA. on January 23, 1924 the son of the late Albert and Amanda (Mahoney) Smith. Charlie was employed for 33 years as a mail clerk at the former Norwich Hospital in Preston retiring on April 1, 1985. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Taftville. Charlie served in the U.S. Navy during W.W. II. He was a member of the American Legion Peter Gallon Post 104 in Taftville, was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 9452 in Preston, was a life member of the Disable American Veteran's John Morse Chapter No. 10, was a blood donor and was active with the Boy Scouts Troop 10 in Taftville. Charlie was twice married. He first married Claire (Deslandes) Smith on January 23, 1943 at Sacred Heart Church in Taftville who died on November 30, 2001. He later married Lucille (LaRose) Gignac Smith on November 4, 2004 at Sacred Heart Church in Taftville who survives him. Besides his wife she is survived by two sons, Charles E Smith Jr. and his wife Jacqueline of Taftville and James A. Smith and his wife Ernestine of Norwich. His five grandchildren; Charles E. Smith III, Pamela Smith, John Smith, Jennifer Smith and David Smith. One great granddaughter, Abby May Napierata and one grant grandson Bailey Napierata, tow step sons, Wayne Gignac of Norwich and Paul Gignac of Danielson. The family would like to thank the Norwichtown Rehab and Care Center for their care and compassion shown to Charlie, during his stay. A calling hour will be held Monday from 9:30 A.M. until 10:30 A.M. at the Guillot Funeral home, 75 South B. St. Taftville followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Church in Taftville at 11:00 A.M. Following the Mass, burial will follow at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Taftville. In lieu of flowers donations may be make to Sacred Heart School, 17 Hunters Ave., Taftville, CT. 06380.
