Irving Cavanor Haggett Jul. 15, 1927 - Aug. 29, 2014 CANTERBURY - On August 29, 2014, Irving Cavanor Haggett, 87, of Howe Rd., Canterbury, CT passed away unexpectedly. He was born July 15, 1927 at home in Groton Connecticut. The son of Wilhelmina Dallas Cavanor and George William Haggett formally of Groton Connecticut. He was the fifth son of the fifth son. Irv enlisted in the US Navy in 1945 during World War II with the rank of first class seaman to defend his country. He received his high school diploma from Fitch High school in Groton Connecticut several years later. He belonged to the Fraternal Bet 1 in 1950 to 1953 and Knights of Physics in Bernard, Maine Irv was a machinist/toolmaker at electric boat for 10 years. While there is proud to work on the Nautilus with Admiral Rickover. He worked at Yardley electric for 22 years and had many patents to his name. He also worked on the design of the batteries for the aerospace industry including the Polaris missile, Apollo Space missions, and the first Space Shuttle. After he retired from Yardley Electric he worked as a consultant for BST engineering in Plainfield. He donated over 10 gallons of blood in his lifetime, some was used for the first open heart transplant surgery in the country. He had many hobbies they included motorcycle riding, beekeeping fishing, photography, gunsmith, and genealogy. He was an avid gardener and canned vegetables for his family. His aim in life was to share his knowledge with his children and grandchildren. He was married to Elizabeth (Betty) Quainton daughter of Anita Scammon and Ralph Quainton for 59 years who predeceased him on June 24, 2006. Irving and Betty are parents of seven children, Sandra Gauthier of Griswold, Vincent Haggett of Chaplin, Ellen DeMaio of Moosup, Hiram Haggett II of Danielson, Daniel Haggett of Coventry, and Thomas Haggett of Canterbury; also 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one son, Michael Haggett. Relatives and friends are invited to a funeral service at the First Congregational Church of Griswold, 12 noon Wednesday Sept. 3rd. Interment will follow at Carey Cemetery, Canterbury. Refreshments to follow at Charlene's Dinner in Jewett City.
