Alexander "Alex" Hart Manning, 99, died Thursday, March 20, 2014, in Humbert Lane, South Strabane Township.
He was born August 30, 1914, in Washington, a son of the late Michael and Susan Smith Manning.
Mr. Manning was a motor machinist's mate first class of the U.S. Coast Guard, during World War II. He was awarded three medals.
He was captain of the Washington Fire Department for 34 years. He also worked for Hazel Atlas as a mold maker.
Mr. Manning was a member of Elks 776, American Legion Post 175 and Disabled American Veterans.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Washington.
On November 18, 1967, he married Nela Marie Harper, who died November 26, 2010.
Surviving are two daughters, Jacqueline (James) Newton of Canonsburg and Jane (Louis) Coppola of Venetia; a stepdaughter, Karen (Frank) Hinerman of Bethel Park; grandchildren, Patrick (Jennifer) Newton and Kensley (Amy) Newton, Louis Coppola III, Michael Coppola, Alexis Coppola and Mario Coppola; four stepgrandchildren, Deanne Hinerman, Julie (Michael) Meechan, Adam Dey and Brenton Dey; six great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Kathe Dey.
Deceased are a son, Curtis Manning; a granddaughter, Lisa Manning; a stepson, Chester Dey; brothers, Sid, Charles, Jacob, Francis and Michael Manning; and sisters, Nellie and Katherine.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, with the Rev. Keith Simmons officiating. Burial will follow in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Township. Full military honors will be accorded graveside by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to City of Washington Fire Department, 43 West Wheeling Street, Washington, PA 15301.
