W. A. "Dubs" Carroll, 92, of Bentleyville, died Wednesday morning, March 19, 2014, in Washington Hospital.He was born January 2, 1922, in Coal Center, a son of Oscar and Garnet Stroud Carroll.A veteran and a recipient of the Purple Heart, he served with the U.S. Army during World War II in Italy.Mr. Carroll retired from Peoples Gas, where he worked as a truck driver.He was a member of Ave Maria Parish.Mr. Carroll enjoyed hunting and camping at the family camp in Cook Forest, Forest County.He assisted with the Bentworth community and high school girls softball leagues.His wife, Margaret C. "Peggy" Weisner Carroll, died December 18, 2010.Surviving are two daughters, Peggy Ann Sculley (retired Maj. Gen. Patrick Sculley) of San Antonio, Texas, and Marian Lese (Joe) of Bentleyville; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; a sister, Anna Lou Burgess of Imperial; and several nieces and nephews.Friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Thompson-Marodi Funeral Home Inc., 809 Main Street, Bentleyville, 724-239-2255, where a prayer service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 22, followed at 10 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial in Ave Maria Church, Bentleyville, with the Rev. Edward L. Yuhas, as celebrant. Interment will follow in Beallsville Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post 165, Bentleyville, and representatives of the U.S. Army.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ave Maria Parish, 126 Church Street, Bentleyville, PA 15314.
