William John "Mingo" Corfont, 88, of Vestaburg, died Thursday, April 24, 2014, in his home, surrounded by his loving family.He was born April 5, 1926, in Brier Hill, a son of the late John and Anna Corfont.Mr. Corfont attended Vestaburg School and was a graduate of Mingo Creek Welding School.He was Catholic and a member of St. Oliver Plunkett Parish in Fredericktown.A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a machine gunner. He served in the South Pacific and also participated in the Occupation of Japan. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal. On May 21, 1946, he was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal.Mr. Corfont was employed as a welder for J&L Vesta 5 Mine. He was a member of United Mine Workers of America and was active as an organizer for the union and served as a recording secretary for Local 762.He was a past commander of American Legion Post 744 in Marianna and, at the time of his death, was a member of American Legion Hanson-Cole Post 391 in Fredericktown. He was a member of the Owls Club and Binnstown Low Hill Lions Club.Mr. Corfont enjoyed baseball. In his youth, he was a pitcher for many area baseball teams. As an adult, he coached the Marianna Legion Baseball Team. In 1995, he was inducted into the Big Ten Fayette County Baseball Hall of Fame. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.On November 17, 1956, he married Audrey Levandosky, who survives.Also surviving are three children, William Gary Corfont of Pittsburgh, Stephanie Ann (Benjamin) Bupka of Clarksville and Andrew (Linda "Lydia") Corfont of Waynesburg; four grandchildren, Jarrod Bupka, Audra Bupka, Alyssa Corfont and Rachael Corfont; and many nieces and nephews.He was the last of his family.Deceased are brothers and sisters Evelyn Maranto, Robert Corfont, Elizabeth "Betty" Sesock, Richard "Joe"Corfont, John "Jack" Corfont, Patty Corfont, and his first wife, Jennie Vincie.Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Frank Burkus Funeral Home, 26 Mill Street, Millsboro, PA 15348, where services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 28, followed by a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Oliver Plunkett Parish, St. Michael Archangel Church, Fredericktown, with the Rev. Paul Grunebach officiating. Interment will follow in Greene County Memorial Park, Morgan Township.Memorial contributions may be made to East Bethlehem Volunteer Fire Company, Fredericktown, PA 15333.
