Ocala - Mr. Damon A. Walker, 75, of Ocala, passed away at his home Monday, March 31, 2014.
Born in Covington, KY, he was raised in Inverness, FL. He graduated from Citrus High School in 1958, where he played football, basketball, and baseball. He was a member of the very first class of Central Florida Junior College in 1959. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, and graduated from Gupton Jones College in Dallas, TX in 1964 with a degree in Mortuary Science.
After graduation, he began a career with Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services that spanned almost 50 years, beginning in August of 1964 until his death Monday morning. Damon loved all things outdoors, and especially loved University of Florida Football. He was affectionately known amongst his peers as "The Legend". As a funeral director, he has served literally thousands of families in Ocala and the surrounding area. He was always willing to share his knowledge and experience to anyone who worked with him. He never met a stranger, and helped train and mentor numerous young men and women who entered the funeral profession.
Damon was a life member of the Optimist Club of Ocala, and an active member of Unity Baptist Church in Anthony. When asked what gave him the most enjoyment in life, he simply said his loving wife and his family.
Damon is survived by his wife of 35 years, Ruth A. Walker; his son Brian Walker, Tampa; his daughter Michele Lackey, Ocala; his sister Sandra Winburn, Gainesville; and his grandchildren Austin and Riley Walker, Tiffany Tivey, Zack, Lauren and Josh Lackey.
Memorial services for Mr. Walker will be held at 4:00 PM on Thursday, April 3, 2014, at Unity Baptist Church, 1300 NE 100th St., Anthony, with Rev. Samuel W. Clements officiating. Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to Marion County Kidney Foundation, 2980 SE 3rd Court, Ocala, FL 34471.
The Walker family would like to personally thank Dr. Mel Seek, Robyn Brown, and the entire Davita staff for the great care that they provided Damon over the years.
