Ocala - Ellwood H. "Doc" Jacobs, DVM, 74, of Ocala, FL, died at 2:10 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2013, at Legacy House Hospice of Marion County.
He was born in Ottawa Lake, MI, on August 20, 1938, the son of Norman and Evelyn (Nieman) Jacobs. Doc graduated from Michigan State University's College of Veterinary Medicine in 1962, initially practicing in large and small animal medicine. He subsequently worked for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture in meat and poultry inspection. He retired as a Circuit Supervisor for the USDA in Jacksonville, FL after 27 years of service.
A member of Joy Evangelical Lutheran Church, he served as Chair of the Stewardship Ministry Team for many years, call committee chairman, bell ringer, LMM secretary and treasurer, and as an usher team leader. His hobbies included golf, playing cards, travel, crossword puzzles, but best of all an advanced square dancer.
Doc is survived by his wife of 49 years, Linda (Onweller) Jacobs, and two sons, Jeffrey Jacobs of Philadelphia, PA, and Michael Jacobs of Jacksonville, FL. He is also survived by two sisters, Lynette (Richard) Merillat, and Linda (Donald) Burack; two brothers, Dean (Judy) Jacobs, and Carl (Linda) Jacobs; an aunt, Mildred Knoblauch (age 99); and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Gary (Jeaneen) Jacobs, Sr.
Memorial Services will be Monday, May 20, 2013 at 11 a.m., at Joy Lutheran Church, 7045 SW 83rd Place, Ocala, FL 34476 with Pastor Edward L. Holloway presiding.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Joy Lutheran Church at the above address.
