Ocala - Jerry J. Schneider, Sr., 79, of Ocala died July 15, 2014.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joyce; his son, Jerry, Jr. (Janet); daughter, Cindy Barbera (Donald); seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and sisters, Joyce Moore and Mary Woodward.
Jerry proudly served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Ajax from 1952-56. As a young man he started his own business as a concrete contractor and worked at it until his retirement.
During his lifetime Jerry was president of the Old Ford Club of Miami and a member of the Carol City Optimist where he coached Little League.
Jerry was instrumental in establishing the Optimist Club of West Miramar and was the charter president. In 1970-71 he earned the honor of being named Prestigious President and received the Governor's Award for the State of Florida along with lifetime membership in Optimist International.
In his retirement years he was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Sacred Heart Council #8012 of Belleview. He actively served his church, St. Theresa's Catholic Church, Belleview working in the thrift store and soup kitchen.
He loved helping others and was a friend to all. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
The family will receive relatives and friends at a visitation to be held at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, Belleview, on Thursday, July 17, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m.. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in St. Theresa's Church, Belleview on Friday, July 18, 2014 at 11:30 a.m.. Committal services with Military Honors will follow in Good Shepherd Memorial Park, Ocala.
