Richard Alphonse Dembroski, age 91, died on June 11, 2014, in Oconto, WI. Richard was born on April 23, 1923, in Lena, WI, to Anna and Joseph Dembroski. He attended Sunnyside Elementary School and graduated from Lena High School, class of 1941. Following high school he worked on the family farm until joining the United States Navy where he honorably served for two years during World War II. Upon completion of military service he returned home to Wisconsin, and in 1950 married his life-long love, Dorothy Mae Leigh. Richard then joined the merchant marine as a crew member aboard the steamer Francis E. House, sailing the Great Lakes for three years. While he loved the water, his love for family called him home, where he used his skills as a commercial carpenter. He spent his career working for the Selmer Construction Company, retiring in 1985.
As a young man, Richard was an outstanding athlete, excelling in basketball and baseball. One of his most memorable achievements was hitting four home runs (two in one inning!), driving in nine runs, and connecting for a two base hit in one game. He said it was a great day. He was a walking encyclopedia of sports facts, especially the Milwaukee Braves and Brewers. Richard was a steward of the land and its resources. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and spent many hours at his farm, accompanied by his dog, Toby. He tended his trees and garden with an attention to detail. Richard was a curious man who read everything from historical novels to Car and Driver magazine. He could talk to anyone about anything.
Richard is survived by his daughter, Kathy (Don) Denor, Oconto, WI; a son, Michael (Angela), Washington, DC; a grandson, Aaron (Sarah) Denor, Lena, WI; and one brother, Ronald (Judy), Lena, WI. He is also survived by cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Dorothy, in 2006.
