Bennis E. Grable, M.D., F.A.C.S.|
Bennis E. Grable, M.D., age 95, of Lodi, Ohio, passed away Friday, Aug. 16, 2013 at Hospice of Medina County in Medina, Ohio.
He was born March 1, 1918 in Akron, Ohio to John and Mable (Rhoades) Grable. He graduated from Springfield High School in 1936, and later entered the U.S. Army in 1942 serving in the European, African Middle Eastern Theater during World War II.
Following his military service he graduated from the Ohio State University School of Medicine in 1951.
He moved to Lodi to join several other doctors in forming Lodi Medical Group, becoming Lodi's first resident surgeon. Together they built the present day Lodi Medical Building on Highland Drive in 1962.
His practice spanned a period of 40 years in Lodi, where he had served as the Chief Medical Officer at Lodi Community Hospital.
Among various civic organizations he was also a member of the Ohio State and Akron Surgical Associations, Fellow, American College of Surgeons, Diplomate, American Board of Surgery, and Trustee, Akron City Hospital.
He was an avid Ohio State Buckeye football fan, attending numerous games as a season ticket holder for many years. He also attended the Indianapolis 500 every year for several decades.
He is survived by his niece, Joyce Poole of Akron; great-niece, Leigh Hundley; great-nephew, Charles Hundley, both of Akron. He was preceded in death by his sister, Lona Flowers and brothers, Glenn and George Grable.
Funeral service will be held Thursday, Aug. 22, at 11 a.m. at the Parker & Son Funeral Home, 210 Medina St., Lodi (330-948-1122), Rev. Donald Kuntz will officiate. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Lodi. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Online tributes may be left at www.parkerfuneralhomes.com.
