Earl L. Givens
Earl Givens, 91, was born in Akron where he resided until his death on February 23, 2014, surrounded by his caring family.
Earl proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was honored to present a wreath to the Unknown Soldier memorial during his World War II Honor Flight in 2010. Earl retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company after 34 years where, among his many positions, he served the membership of URW Local 2 as Vice President, was elected to the URW International Union Board and co-founded the Goodyear Relief Association. He also had a 38 year career as a Realtor, retiring at the age of 89 from Mosholder Realty. Both careers afforded him the opportunity to show his true passion for helping others as both mentor and friend. He was a member of the Akron Area Board of Realtors, the Tadmor Shriners, and was a 32nd degree Mason. Earl was an avid sports fan who truly enjoyed the game of golf and derived much happiness from dancing with his loving wife of 57 years, Marie.
Along with his wife, he is survived by his four daughters, Sherry, Candace, Cathy (Wayne), Tina; his grandchildren, Jason, Brandy, Kathleen (Al), Dow (Nicole), Jon, Candy, Deanna; his 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; his sister, Jean; many loving nieces and nephews; and his faithful feline companion, Ms. Kitty. He was preceded in death by mother, Anna; father, Forrest; brothers, Forrest, Ernest, Walter; sisters, Helen, Georgie, Juanita.
A celebration of his life will be held at Hopkins Lawver Funeral home, 547 Canton Rd., Akron, Ohio. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, February 28. A memorial service will begin at 6:30 p.m., with family member Dan Brewster officiating. The family suggests memorials be made to the Knights Templar Eye Foundation, 1033 Long Prairie Rd., Suite 5, Flower Mound, TX 75022.
