He was born in Braxton County, West Virginia in 1925 to Grace McLaughlin and Gayle Singleton. Red was a veteran of the Navy serving during World War II in the Atlantic Theater. Special thanks to his granddaughter Candi who cared for Red in his final year.

"When you are lonely and sick of heart,

Go to the friends we know.

And bury your sorrows

in doing good deeds.

Miss me but let me go."
