Brother Guy J. Eckels, C.S.C.|
Holy Cross Brother Guy Eckels, 68, died on Aug. 11, 2013, at Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills, Ohio.
Born in Gary, Ind., he graduated from Andrean High School, then made first vows in the Congregation of Holy Cross. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Notre Dame.
In 1968, Brother Guy was assigned to Archbishop Hoban High School, where he would teach for 29 years. He earned a Master of Science degree in biology in 1975 from St. Mary's College in Winona, Minn. He stayed current with the latest teaching methods in biology and was among the earliest teachers to use computer technology in the classroom. Outside the classroom, Brother Guy was interested in theater. He produced dozens of student productions, specializing in set construction and in sound and lighting.
From 1998 to 2007, Brother Guy taught science at St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio. He joined the staff at Gilmour Academy in 2011, where he assisted students in the library and computer center. He was known for his humor and enthusiasm.
There will be two memorial services to honor Brother Guy. On Wednesday, Aug. 14, there will be a viewing at 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Our Lady at Gilmour Academy, Gates Mills, followed by a Mass at 7:30 p.m., with Holy Cross Father John Blazek celebrating. Then on Saturday, Aug. 17, there will a viewing at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Chapel on the grounds of Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame, Ind.
Father Blazek will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. Interment at St. Joseph's Cemetery in the Village will follow.
