Hubert Thomas Hovance, age 90, of Ravenna, passed away Saturday, April 6, 2013.|
He was born February 23, 1923, in Cleveland, Ohio, a son of the late Michael and Dorothy (Cline) Hovance. Hubert graduated from Bedford High School and then joined the Army, proudly serving in World War II. He was decorated veteran attaining the rank of First Sergeant. Mr. Hovance would always place the needs of the other men in his platoon before his own. Later, he was just as dedicated to his family.
Hubert was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish and a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He loved to ride his motorcycle and was a member of the Great Lakes Harley Club. Hubert was a mechanical engineer and retired from Firestone. He worked with Wernher von Braun on the United States Rocket Program. After retirement, Hubert and his wife Jo moved to Romney, West Virginia, until returning to Brimfield and later Ravenna.
Hubert is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Lenila "Jo" (O'Donnell) Hovance, whom he married on November 12, 1942. He is also survived by his daughters, Lydene (Danny) Kende of Randolph, Sharon (Henry) More of Tallmadge, Carolyn (Robert) Rees of Norton, and Elise (Ken) Enloe of Florida; grandchildren, Tim (Gail), Michael Patrick, Shannon (Jenifer), Bridget (Chris), Shane, Andy, Nikki (Lenny), and Stephanie; great-grandchildren, Kyleigh, Kelsey, Kerrie, Brian, Megan, Madison, Kaycie, Zachary, Aubrey, Emma, and Skylar; as well as his sisters, Dolores and Eunice. Hubert was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Michael.
Friends will be received Wednesday, April 10, 2013, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna, with Reverend John Madden officiating the funeral service at 12 p.m. Interment will follow with military honors provided by the U.S. Army and VFW Post 1055 at Grandview Memorial Park.
