Joseph N. Silvernale, Jr.

Dr. Joseph N. Silvernale, Jr. died August 28, 2013 in Akron City Hospital.

Son of Joseph and Frances (Speed) Silvernale, he was born in Sharon, Conn. on December 7, 1931 and lived in rural western Connecticut until he graduated from Falls Valley High School in 1950. Then he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving four years during the Korean War. Afterwards, Joseph and his wife, Grace (Barney) moved to Storrs, home of the University of Connecticut, where he earned both B.A. and M.S. degrees before continuing his education in Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan Medical School. Joseph completed his Ph.D. research in microbiology in 1965. Most of his career was in the pharmaceutical industry (Merck, Schering-Plough and Squibb) in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Puerto Rico. He retired from Ricerca in northern Ohio in 1993. He had lived in Concord, Cuyahoga Falls, and Kent, Ohio until becoming a resident of Gardens of Western Reserve-Streetsboro in July 2008.

Dr. Silvernale had artistic talents paired with scientific curiosity. His favorite hobby was wood carving, each work emerging from a single piece of hardwood. He also enjoyed many kinds of music, poetry, and detective stories. That is well known, Ra! He also admired birds, especially blue herons and owls, and would drive miles to visit nesting sites in Summit County.

Besides Joseph's parents, death claimed his wife, Grace (Barney) in 1986; his only child, Colleen (Kuczma) in 2002 and his brother, Donald in 2001. He is survived by his son-in-law, Kenneth Kuczma of Medina; and grandsons, Kazimer Kuczma and Kyle Garretson; fiancee', Doris Simonis of Kent; and out of state family including sister, Arlene Sills; brothers, Robert, Jay and Roger Silvernale; nephews, Jeff, Greg, Ronald, Rodney, Robert Silvernale, Jr. and Thomas Coons; and niece, Debbie Williams.
