Joseph Paul Millin Obituary
Joseph Paul Millin

TALLMADGE -- Joseph Paul Millin died at home surrounded by his wife and children on October 2, 2013, following a long, courageous battle with lung disease. He was 90 years old.

Born in a house in Akron, Ohio, Joe graduated from Cleveland Heights High School in 1942, after which he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps where he served as an anti-aircraft radar technician in the South Pacific until the end of World War II. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant as a member of the famed 3rd Defense Battalion and participated in the consolidation of the Solomon Islands, including the Battle of Guadalcanal. He then returned to Cleveland's east side, where he operated a successful hearing aid dealership before returning to Case Western Reserve where he earned his Ph.D. in Audiology in 1968. He spent the next 22 years as a professor at Kent State University where he was beloved by his students until retiring in 1988. He made his home in Tallmadge for the past 42 years where he was active in the community. A recent highlight of his life was attending a dinner given in his honor by some of his former students from all over the U.S.

Joseph was a passionate Indians fan and coached both Little League Baseball and Softball. He took joy in golfing, literature, big band music, and above all, his relationships with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jennybel; daughter, Paula (Michael) Millin-Lipnos of Wooster; son, Joseph M. Millin of Sandy Lake; brother-in-law, Art McCartney of Scio; and granddaughter, Lauren Lipnos.

A Memorial Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013 at Donovan Funeral Home, 339 Southwest Ave., Tallmadge. Visitation will be 5 until 8 p.m. Monday, October 7, 2013 at the funeral home.

Memorial donations, which will help fund a scholarship, may be made to KSU Speech Pathology and Audiology Alumni Scholarship (in memory of Joseph P. Millin), Speech Pathology and Audiology, 1325 Theatre Drive, Kent, Ohio 44242.
