Josephine (Brown) Hanlon Obituary
Josephine Brown Hanlon

Josephine Brown Hanlon, 80, passed away March 27, 2014 after a debilitating battle with Alzheimer's. Josephine was born in Norwalk, Ohio where she was raised on her family farm.

She graduated valedictorian of the class of 1952 from St. Paul High School in Norwalk. She then attended Notre Dame College of Ohio and graduated with a degree in Biology and obtained her teaching certification. While attending Notre Dame she met the love of her life, Herbert Hanlon, on a blind date. They were married June 14, 1958. She and Herbert attended St. Louis University where Josephine obtained a Master's degree in Education (Administration and Supervision) the same year Herbert graduated from Medical School. They moved to Akron for Herbert's internship and residency at Akron General Hospital and created a wonderful life in Akron. Josephine taught high school in North Fairfield, Ohio and St. Louis. When she moved to Akron she remained busy as a wonderful and loving mother of five active children and found many volunteer opportunities. She was past president of NCCW, board member of CYO, board member of Freedom Brass Band, and was active at St. Hilary Parish as one of the founders of the JOY program, providing funeral lunches and her own personal "parking lot ministry". Josephine's youngest son got an Akron Beacon Journal paper route when he was 16 and she enjoyed delivering the papers and family one-on-one time so much that she continued for 28 years with the help of her husband, her children and many of her grandchildren at different times until last year when disease progression prevented further service. Josephine was happiest outdoors – whether she was planting flowers, gardening, or watching sporting events of her children or grand- children.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Beatrice (Bick) Brown. She is survived by husband of 55 years, Herbert; children, James (Alicia), Michael, Mary Jo Heckman, Kathleen, and John (Trayce); grandchildren, A.J., Alaina, Sydney, Samantha, Michael, Johnny, Dakota and Austin Hanlon, Jackie White (Jamie), Ashley, Daniel, Tyler and Alex Heckman, Jessica Kozlowski Morris; and great-grandchildren, Kalyn, Tessie, Braxton, and Aiden.

Family and friends may call at Ciriello and Carr Funeral Home, 39 S. Miller Rd., Fairlawn on Tuesday, 2 to 4 or 6-8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Hilary Catholic Church. Additional visitation will be held inside St. Alphonsus Church in Norwalk from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Followed by interment at St. Alphonsus Cemetery.
