Mary E. (Betty) Sheil Elsaesser
Mary E. (Betty) Sheil Elsaesser, age 89, formerly of Canton, Ohio, passed away Friday, January 10, 2014 in Palmetto Richland Hospital, Columbia, S.C.
Born July 18, 1924, in Canton, she was the daughter of William and Ruth Butcher Sheil. She was married to Louis O. Elsaesser, also of Canton. She graduated from McKinley H.S. in 1942 and Ohio State University in 1946, where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Betty was a teacher and school principal for the Stark County Board of Mental Retardation & Developmental Services and retired in 1987 after 20 years of service, after which she served as a long-term volunteer for the Association of Retarded Citizens and the Stark County Historical Society, which runs the McKinley Museum. She was the recipient of many awards and honors, including the Anne J. Lambert Memorial Award for Outstanding Administrator from the Stark County Council for Exceptional Children.
She is survived by her daughter, Patricia L. Coate, of Columbia, S.C.; her son, Louis W. Elsaesser of Brecksville, Ohio; two grandchildren, Bryan Elsaesser of Cary, N.C., and Jessica Coate of Charlotte, N.C.; and one great-grandson.
A memorial service will be held at a future date, to be announced, at the Arnold Funeral Home in Canton, Ohio, followed by interment at Northlawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to in lieu of flowers.
