Wallace G. "Wally" Hughes

Wallace G. "Wally" Hughes, age 84, went home to be with the Lord on April 12, 2014, joining his beloved wife of 52 years, his "Lady" Billie.

Wally was born on August 2, 1929, in Akron, Ohio, the eldest son of Emmett and Emma Hughes. He played basketball during high school at South High (class of 1947); the Cavaliers capturing two State Championships. Wally and Billie both participated on their respective reunion committees all their lives.

Wally served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force stationed in Japan during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in October 1953. On June 12, 1954, Wally wed the love of his life, Billie, his sister Marilyn's friend. They moved to Philadelphia, Pa. where Wally put himself through college, graduating with a pharmacy degree from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science. Their first daughter, Kimberly, was born in Philadelphia. The family later moved to Kalamazoo, Mich. while Wally worked in Research and Development at Upjohn (now Phizer). Their second daughter, Terri, was born in Michigan. Missing their families in Akron, the couple relocated to Clinton (Mellody Village) in 1960, where they resided for nearly 50 years. Wally worked for Youngfellow Drug and later F. W. Albrecht where he was the first pharmacist at the Montrose Acme. He worked there 20 years until his retirement in 1994.

Wally was a member of Grace Church in Norton, where he participated in the Thursday morning men's Bible Study. He enjoyed golf, travel and being with his family.

Wally is survived by his daughters, Kimberly Israel of Barberton and Terri (Michael) Hunsinger of Copley; grandchildren, Kristi van der Meer, Lani (Rebecca) van der Meer, Corey and Lindsey Krunich, Yoshua Israel and Donavan Hunsinger; he has two beautiful great-grandchildren, Savannah and Gavin.

The family would like to thank the staff and care givers at Brookdale Place of Bath, Hospice of VNS, particularly Becky Staley, the Mrdjanovs, Betty Dennison and the Copley Medical Group. Special thanks to Pastor Bob Combs for his years of support.
