July 10, 1932 - Oct 17, 2012 THE VILLAGE Albert "Al" Morrell Chandler died October 17, 2012, in Oklahoma City, OK. Al was born in Pontiac, MI on July 10, 1932, to Albert and Marion Chandler. He graduated from Pontiac High School in 1950 and received a degree in Pharmacy from Wayne State University, Detroit, MI, in 1955. Al served his country in the Naval Reserve 1951-1959. He married Margaret Jean Gould on August 29, 1959. Al received a PhD in Physiological Chemistry from Wayne State University in 1962. His post-doctoral research was performed at Ohio State University and Wayne State University. In 1966, he accepted a position in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department at Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center. He taught biochemistry for 30 years, was a respected professor, co-edited the Biochemistry "Oklahoma Notes," and also served as Acting Chairman for a total of six years. Al enjoyed sailing on Lake Hefner and was a member of the Oklahoma City Boat Club for many years. He introduced his children to the joys of sailing on his Luder 21 and Santana 22. Al was an excellent tenor and sang with the Canterbury Choral Society as well as his church choir. An active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, Al served as Elder, Deacon, choir member, and volunteer for vacation bible school and the tutoring program at Ridgeview Elementary School. Al was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert; and niece, Lynn Monea. He is survived by his wife, Jean; son, Ron, and his wife, Carolyn; son, Ken, and his wife, Beth; daughter, Karen, and her husband, Ben Wallace; grandchildren, Ian and Mary Wallace and Rachael Chandler; brother, James, and his wife, Kay; brother-in-law, Ed Gould, and his wife, Bonnie; and his loving nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 27 at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Oklahoma City. In lieu of flowers, a Memorial Fund at Covenant Presbyterian Church will be dedicated to benefit Ridgeview Elementary School, where Al enjoyed many hours tutoring children.
