April 14, 1947 - January 18, 2014 NORMAN Mike Deskin was a humble and generous man who passed away on Saturday, January 18th, 2014. He was a special person who made an impact on anyone he met. Mike was critically injured in Vietnam while serving in the Army on August 4th, 1968. His injuries were so severe that his parents were told he probably wouldn't survive 6 months. He was a fighter, after an extended time in several hospitals he was released to go home and was told to expect to live 5-6 years. He was a quadriplegic with limited hand use. He ended up getting a job with Gene McKown in 1971; and continued to work for Gene until his passing. He might have been in a wheelchair but he never considered himself handicapped. He was a dedicated coach who led winning teams in the City of Norman Little League Baseball Program. He coached kids of all ages from T-Ball thru upper aged teenage boys. He taught them more than baseball, he taught them important life lessons and respect. Thousands of kids and parents were touched by Mike's amazing attitude and caring nature. He was a dedicated father, grandfather and friend. Mike was decorated with the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device 60, and Purple Heart. He earned Marksman (Rifle M-14) and Sharpshooter (Rifle M-16). Mike Deskin is survived by Lynn Deskin wife of home; 3 children, Chris Deskin and wife Cindy of Norman, Deana Roberts and husband Dewayne of Arkansas, Geana Wray and husband John of Virginia; 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Carol Wilson and Carla Deskin both of Norman; 1 uncle, Lester ''Bear'' Jensen and wife Hazel of Norman. Preceded in death by Carl Deskin, father and Irene Deskin, mother. His Celebration of Life will be held at The Embassy Suites Hotel, 2501 Conference Drive, Norman, Oklahoma 73069 on Saturday, January 25th, 2014, from 2pm until 4pm. Casual attire at Mike's request.
