Around this time, he tried to join every branch of the Armed Forces to fight for the cause and be with his friends. However, each time he was denied because of a medical condition. After working for Bama Pie Company and Ford Motor Company, James began what became a 34-year career as a fireman at Tinker Air Force Base. He retired prior to his 55th birthday as Assistant Fire Chief. James was a rancher throughout his adult life, even until his late 80's. His interest in animals ranged anywhere from exotic birds to sheep, goats, cattle and many others. In addition, he was always working on a project that he had saved for retirement.
