The Rev. Dr. James M. Barnett, age, 87, died on Thursday, April 18, 2013, at Ridgewood in Bennington, NE. He was born on October 21, 1925, in Baton Rouge, LA, to James and Egeria (Brooks) Barnett. He married Marian Scofield and had 4 children. James was ordained as an Episcopal priest and served for over 30 years as the rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Norfolk, NE, retiring to Omaha in 1991. Prior to that, he served as rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Lamar, CO. He received his B.A. from Louisiana State University; his Master of Divinity Degree from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary; and a Doctor of Ministry Degree in the Joint Sewanee-Vanderbilt program from the University of the South. James was the author of "The Diaconate: A Full and Equal Order," considered by many as the definitive work on the Office of the Diaconate in the Church. In his book, James called for a restoration of the Office of the Deacon to its original place as a full and equal order. James is survived by his 4 sons, Mark Barnett and wife Mary, John Barnett, Tom Barnett and wife Alexa, and Paul Barnett and wife Pam; 7 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren.
A SERVICE will be held on Friday, May 10, at 10am, at Trinity Cathedral, 109 North 18th Street, Omaha, NE 68102. The Right Reverend J. Scott Barker, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Nebraska, will preside, and the homily will be delivered by the Reverend Mark Selvey. The Interment will be held in Baton Rouge, LA, at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Episcopal Relief and Development, P.O. Box 7058, Merrifield, VA 22116-7058.
