DON MORAND Obituary
Morand, Don, born August 13, 1930 in Ellensburg, WA, was the second of five sons to Larry and Gertrude Morand. As his father worked for the WPA, his family moved around the Western US. He graduated from El Monte High School in 1948 and saw combat as a tank commander in the Korean War. In 1957, at the age of 26, he married 18-year-old Jeanine Tait. They remained married for the next 56 years and had four children: Lisa, Donny, Mary and Dawn. A devout Catholic, Don served over 25 years in the Knights of Columbus at St. Angela Merici in Brea. He was a Knight of the Fourth Order and acted as Grand Knight from 1991-1992. Don worked for Boys Market for many years, and in 1976 founded Inland Empire Fire and Safety. Don was devoted to his family. As a master BBQ'er, Don hosted many family gatherings. He took childlike joy in parades, presents, parties, fireworks and superhero movies. He loved music and often whipped out his harmonica to play church hymns, patriotic tunes, and "Happy Birthday" (sometimes to the chagrin of his family!). Active in his community, he helped found the Bread of Angels soup kitchen at St. Angela's, where he and Jeanine spent many Saturdays, and the Medjugorje Peace Conference, held annually at the Bren Center in Irvine since 1990. He lost his long battle with cancer on June 17, 2013. He passed surrounded by his loving and grateful family. He leaves behind his wife, Jeanine; daughters, Lisa and husband Mike DiCesaris, Mary and husband Tom Matuzak, and Dawn Morand. His legacy includes 9 grandchildren, Michael, Jennifer, Jeanine, Juleen, Elizabeth, Alexandra, Maggie, Max and Will, and 5 great grandchildren, Katie, Natalie, Russ, Sofia and Stella, who continue on in the Catholic faith he modeled throughout his life. Funeral services: Rosary and service Sunday, June 23 at 7:30 PM at Memory Gardens in Brea, and funeral mass at 10 AM on Monday, June 24 at St. Angela Merici's parish in Brea at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bread of Angels Soup Kitchen at St. Angela's, 585 S. Walnut Avenue, Brea, CA 92821-5306.
