Henrietta "Henry" was born and raised in Tustin, CA. She was one of 9 children. Her parents were Gaston and Blanche Griset, citrus ranchers on Irvine Blvd. She attended Tustin High School and Santa Ana JC. Henry was active in sports, Scouting and 4H, receiving the Diamond All Star award in 1942. She graduated from UC Berkeley with a BA in English and SF State with a Masters in Art. In 1949 she joined the Navy Waves as a journalist. She was stationed in Seattle and Hawaii. She enjoyed the Navy and Hawaii, pursuing her interests in photography, writing, painting, drama and even motorcycling around the island. One of her many duties while stationed in Hawaii was giving the guided tours at Pearl Harbor. She taught Art, English, Photography and travel at Mt. Miguel and El Capitan High Schools and at Moorpark Jr. College. In 1959 she married John E. Hurley. During their 51 years together they enjoyed teaching, traveling, the arts and literature, cooking, gardening and music. They loved talking to people. Henrietta was a photographer, painter and writer, well-known for her letter writing and journaling. She was fun to be with and with a twinkle in her eye and a big smile on her face, she would often give her many nieces and nephews a "wild" sculpture or drawing for a gift; labeled "conversation piece." In 1983, she and John retired to their Creston, CA 40 acres and later to the Oaks at the Villages, both in San Luis Obispo County.

Graveside services will be held 1pm Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Fairhaven Memorial Park, Santa Ana, CA (714) 633-1442.

A Memorial Tea is planned for February 16, 2014 from 2-4pm at The Villages at The Oaks 61 Broad St., San Luis Obispo, CA (805) 543-2342.
