NERO ROY Obituary
Roy, Nero, 93

Although never part of his plan, Nero Roy left this planet for another construction project in the sky on Feb. 27, 2014. Born in San Antonio, Texas on July 23, 1920 to Nereus H. and Jeanette Taggart Roy, he spent his early years in Mexico and Texas while his father worked for oil companies searching the Yucatan for oil. After a few years, the family settled in Champaign, Illinois where Nero graduated as a civil engineer from the University of Illinois. He worked briefly for Delco before enlisting in the US Army Air Corp where he served in southern Italy for the remainder of WWII. Returning to the States, he took a position with the Austin Company providing sales/engineering support for new building projects. After meeting Edythe Barlow at a church picnic in 1946, he loved to say, "I shook her hand to greet her and never let go." They married in Cleveland in 1947.

Three children arrived over the next 7 years - Charles, Robert, and Nancy - while the young family searched for the ideal home. They found it in 1960 in Orange Park Acres. Edie fell in love with the orange grove while Nero saw the potential for home sites. Fortunately, Edie's idea prevailed for many years until the dying citrus industry in Orange County proved to be unsustainable. In the meantime, Nero took his building experience to Cucamonga where he developed several tracts of single family homes during the 1960's. While he continued to build several smaller projects during his retirement, travel became a major hobby after the children left home. Their first big trip, a 3 month journey, took them around the world after their youngest left for college. After that they enjoyed many trips across the US in their motor home and abroad to exotic locations. His beloved travel companion, Edie, passed in 2005 yet Nero continued the family tradition of travel for the next several years, this time with the children and grandchildren in tow.

Nero is survived by Charlie and Sue Roy, Nancy, Audrey and Wesley Reid; Carol Curtis and Meredith Pierce; Amy and Jim Dundon-Berchtold; and a passel of adoring friends from the East Orange Rotary club, where he was a member since 1975, and throughout Orange County. A celebration of his life will be held at a future date.
