RUDOLF ANTONIUS "RUDY" DEBERNITZ Obituary
Debernitz, Rudolf "Rudy" Antonius

On the evening of August 16th, 2013, Rudy passed away at Saddleback Memorial Hospital in Laguna Hills, CA as a result of complications from multiple strokes. Rudy had just celebrated his 81st birthday while receiving care at the hospital. He was surrounded by family and loved ones at the time of his passing.

Rudy was born in Torbor, Poland (Germany at the time) on August 13th, 1932. He was the youngest of 9 brothers and sisters. In his early years the family fled North Eastern Germany from the advancing Russian army and settled in Rheda-Wiedenbruck, Germany. He immigrated to Canada in the early 50s and received his Bachelors degree from the University of Toronto.

Rudy received his Masters from UCLA and taught English and History at a high school in Whittier. Shortly thereafter he began his most well known career as a German teacher at Golden West College where he taught for over 30 years before retiring. This job was the one that you most likely know him from. His passion for teaching resulted in exposing many young folks to not only the language but also the culture, foods, and humor that the European continent had to offer.

Rudy was legendary for his summer sabbatical trips to Europe where he chaperoned 40-50 college students and immersed them firsthand in all the glories of European culture.

Rudy continued to be an active member of his community singing with the local German club, the Continental club, and the Chess club. Rudy was also actively giving to multiple charities and very generous with his family and friends or anyone who needed help.

He loved to work in his garden, and construction projects around the house. He had an extensive background in construction and could fix or repair nearly anything in a home. He also was very fond of cats and greatly enjoyed a glass of wine or a cold beer.

Rudy is survived by his wife, Isabella; son, Eric; and two grandsons, Kalen and Iain. Rudy has one sister still living; Maria. There are many cousins, nephews and nieces.
