THADDEUS A. LAIRD Obituary
Laird, Thaddeus A . M/SGT. USMC retired, 87, died January 27. He was born in Savannah, Georgia on October 25, 1925. His parents were Capt. and Mrs. C.G. Laird USN. He is survived by his wife, Mary; sons, Charles and Thad; daughters, Catherine, Jeanmarie and Andrea; nine grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren; one sister, Matilda Stacy of Savannah, GA. He attended schools in Savannah. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1943, attended Boot camp in San Diego and Scout/Sniper school at Camp Pendleton. He then was sent to the South Pacific and was on Bougainville when he was transferred to the St. Louis as a gunner. He then was sent to Camp Lejeune and was with the War Dogs when the WW II ended. He was discharged then attended Armstrong college in Savannah. He signed a contract with the Philadelphia athletics and played baseball traveling the southern states. He then reenlisted and played baseball for the USMC, and was a "DI" at Parris Island, South Carolina. He left to join the Brigade in August 1950 and was in the Chosin Reservoir where he was awarded the Bronze Star with the combat "V". He then became a part of the Presidential guard for Harry Truman at Key West, Fla., and then back to Parris Island, S.C. as a D.I.; various assignments at Camp Lejune, Quantico, FMF, Recruiter in Atlanta, Georgia and Los Angeles where he retired. He then went to work at the US Postal Service for 20+ years.

He then started a hobby of wood working and became a self taught master turner of wooden segmented bowls, winning several awards at the L.A. county and Orange county fairs.

Rosary will be on Tuesday, Feb. 5th at 7:00 PM, at the Brown Colonial Mortuary in Santa Ana, CA. Burial will be at the National Veterans Cemetery in Riverside California on Wednesday, Feb. 6th at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Woundedwarriorproject.org
