Chenard, William Riley|
June 22, 1921 - December 20, 2012
With great sadness we announce the passing of Chenard, William "Bill" Riley, 91, who was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. Bill passed away peacefully under the care and support of his family. Bill was born in Los Angeles, CA to Robert J. and Phoebe M. Chenard. Bill's early years were consumed with his love for music. As a boy, he was hired to play the piano on the local radio station, later attended a music conservatory, and played with Colonel Vesey Walker at the San Diego Exposition. He grew up in the Los Angeles area and attended Fremont High School where he excelled in sports. After high school, Bill attended Modesto Junior College to play basketball and baseball with an offer to transfer to USC, but instead went on to pitch for the Pacific Coast League's (PCL) San Diego Padres. Then, during the war he joined the military and played both baseball and basketball for the US Coast Guard during his service in World War II. There he met his future wife and partner of 67 years, Ruby Alice Chenard (Ritter). He had hopes of playing professional baseball and was made an offer to play for the Washington Senators, but decided on family life. One of Bill's fondest memories of his sports days was playing basketball for a team that played the Harlem Globetrotter's. When Bill's playing days were over they eventually settled down in Whittier, CA where they started a family, adopting the joys of their lives, Jeffrey (Patti) and Janice (Michael Pawloski). As his young family grew, Bill was dedicated to the school and activities at Granada Heights Friends Church in La Mirada involving his kids. He also became installed as a Free Mason and attained the position of Past Master. During Bill's career life he was mainly in sales, but people who knew him best, knew it was just a way for him to get to know people. He held positions in a number of industries, from John Hancock, Boise Cascade, Shaklee, and other residential real estate companies, eventually starting his own direct marketing and mailing business, BonusPak. When Bill and Ruby were seventy, they were blessed with, Nicole, their one and only grandchild, who lit up his life in his later years. Finally, Bill's life was characterized by his love of people and his love for the Lord Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.
Memorial services followed by a reception will be held at Yorba Linda Friends Church on Friday, December, 28th at 11am, 5211 Lakeview Avenue, Yorba Linda, CA 92886. A private interment will be held at Riverside National Cemetery at a later date.
