Franklin BANKS Notice
BANKS, Franklin age 79, of Columbus, died on December 21, 2013. He was born in Sanford, Florida, on November 20, 1934. He received a BA from Rollins College and a MA and PhD from The Ohio State University. After obtaining his MA degree, he worked for six years as a research assistant in the Alcoholism Unit of the Ohio Department of Health. He taught for thirty-four years at The Ohio State University on the Department of Preventive Medicine and the School of Public Health. He had a rich academic career at OSU, working with both medical and public health students. He served as Director of the Community Medicine Rotation, an educational program where fourth year medical students participated in health assignments in Ohio, in forty-four other states, and in forty-eight other countries. He also served as Director of the Community Project, a required educational program for first year medical students where they studied a health of social service agency and provided assistance to those programs. He also enjoyed working with graduate students in public health, teaching courses in Behavioral Epidemiology, Behavioral Factors in Health and Illness, and Public Health Organizations. He was active in dealing with a variety of social issues. A member of the Education Committee at Brookwood Presbyterian Church and the Peacemaking and Justice Committee of the Presbytery of Scioto Valley, he helped to arrange informative community educational programs. He was an active member at Brookwood Presbyterian Church serving also as an elder and a member of the church choir. He is preceded in death by Dixie Banks, his first wife. Dixie and he had two sons: Kevin (wife Kimberly) who formally worked at Time Warner Cable and Stephen (wife Christina) who is a Columbus Police Officer. He was also preceded in death by Karen Banks his second wife. Karen and he had interest in music, puppetry, theater and travel. He is survived by the following grandchildren: Joshua Banks, Courtnay Banks, Zachary Banks, Samantha Banks, Cody Hetterscheidt. He is survived by two brothers: E.G. Banks (wife Patricia), Edward Doyle and a sister Darlyn Galloway (husband Carl). He enjoyed preforming country and bluegrass music. He especially enjoyed performing with the Gurney Grazers, and amateur bluegrass band. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM at Brookwood Presbyterian Church on Saturday, January 18th, 2014. Catered reception to follow. Brookwood Church is located in Columbus at 2685 E.
