Colonel Harry Clarke Notice
Clarke, Harry Colonel USMC Retpassed away January 2, 2014. He was born in 1919 to Harry and Edna Clarke, Washington, DC, April 1919 and grew up in Wauwatosa, WI. He graduated from the U of Wisconsin (BS CivEng) and commissioned in US Marine Corps, Sept 1941. During WWII, he participated in European and African campaigns aboard USS RANGER (CV-4). In 1945, as a Combat Engineer, he served in command positions with the 3rd and 5th Marine Divisions during the occupation of Japan. He held additional command positions with the 2ndMarDiv, followed by assignments at Quantico, VA and Parris Island, SC. During the Korean War, he served as CO 1stEngrBn and as 1stMarDiv Engineering Officer, coordinating the building/maintenance of bridges and facilities throughout the Korean peninsula. He was assigned to HQMC, then to Quantico,VA to complete Senior Course and then HQ FMFPAC,Hawaii. In 1960, he served as Maintenance Officer,Camp Pendleton,CA and in 1963, as the ACoS (G-4) and then CO, Marine Corps Engineer Schools at Camp Lejeune,NC. Retiring in 1966, he relocated to Winter Park, FL, completed additional graduate education at FTU, taught mathematics at Sanford Naval Academy and worked with Field Enterprises, Inc. Into his 90's he was an avid golfer at the Winter Pines Golf Course. He was a Life member of the 1stMarDiv Assoc. and the First Congregational Church of Winter Park. His military awards included the Legion of Merit with Combat V as well as numerous campaign and service awards. He was a member of ASCE, Phi Eta Sigma, Chi Epsilon, and Psi Upsilon. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Amy, three sons: Scott (Carolyn)Oviedo,FL; Steven(Janet)Virginia Beach,VA; and Craig, Sanford,NC; two granddaughters: Valerie Clarke(Paul), Maitland,FL; Kelly Harris(Justin), Richmond,VA; two grandsons: Andrew Clarke, Oviedo, FL; Christopher Clarke (Nicole), Ashburn,VA; great-grandson PJ Diaz, Maitland,FL. A Memorial Service will be held from 2:30-4:00 pm, Friday, January 31, 2014 at the Mayflower Retirement Ctr, 1620 Mayflower Ct, Winter Park, FL 32792. Burial to be at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors on a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Central Florida Chapter, 1st Marine Division Association, 746 McIntyre Ave., Winter Park, FL 32792.
