Howard Arthur "Art" Vedner Notice
Vedner, Howard ArthurArtdied on Monday, September 2, 2013 at Hospice of the Comforter in Altamonte Springs, FL after a valiant two year battle fighting pancreatic cancer. Art was born July 13, 1944 in Chicago, IL to the late Germaine and Arthur Vedner. At the age of seven, his family moved from Chicago to Indianapolis, IN and in 1958 moved to St. Petersburg, FL where he spent most of his childhood and the first few years of his adult life. Art attended Bishop Barry Catholic High School in St. Petersburg and graduated from the University of South Florida in 1968 with a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering. In his last three years of college, he was in the college co-op program and worked at the Army-Navy Missile Command Center in Huntsville, AL. Art was a member of Verdondi and Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. After graduation from college in 1968, Art joined the Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Tampa, FL as a Staff Specialist Associate. His career with Westinghouse took him from Tampa to Pittsburgh, PA where he was the PWR Systems Division Controller and then to Athens, GA as the Distribution Transformers Division Controller. While in Athens he was a member of the School of Accounting Advisory Council for the University of Georgia. In 1983 he accepted a position at the Westinghouse Power Generation facility in Orlando, FL. During his years at Westinghouse in Orlando, he was Chief Financial Officer of the Power Generation Business Unit, Division General Manager of the Electrical Systems Services Division and Director of PGBU Total Quality. He was selected to and attended the Executive Management Program at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA. Art retired at the age of 52 after thirty years with Westinghouse Electric Corporation. After retirement, he started his own company, Executive Business Solutions, Inc. a business consulting and executive recruiting service. He was also one of the founders and business partners in an executive recruiting company, Exiance. Along with his wife and family, Art was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church in Altamonte Springs, FL. Art was a highly skilled and Diocese of Orlando trained and educated Catholic Catechist/Teacher. Thus he served on a variety of Adult Faith Formation programs and teams during these past 15 years, too many to count. He always taught CCD and Faith Formation classes to high school students at his prior parishes. At Annunciation Catholic Church, Art served the community as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, Spiritual Director for two Christ Renews Men's Team Retreats and its steering committee, a founding member of the parish-based "Whole Community Catechesis Program", an Emmaus Ministry Brother and a year-long attendee of the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius, also known as "The Long Retreat". Art lovingly referred to as "PaPa" by his grandchildren, looked forward to weekends spent at New Smyrna Beach with his wife, his children and grandchildren and many of his dear friends. Art was an avid golfer, and cherished his special times hunting and fishing with his grandsons who he called "Papa's Boys." Art was a loving and loyal husband, an amazing father and grandfather, a teacher of his wisdom, a protector of his family, a spiritual guide in his faith, and an inspiration to all who knew him. His family will miss him more than words can say. He will forever be in our hearts and will always be our hero. He is survived by his wife of forty-six years and high school sweetheart Nancy Vedner, daughter April Schwartz, son Brian Vedner, daughter Christina Walk, grandsons Spencer, Harrison and Hunter Schwartz, and Liam Walk, granddaughter Cassandra Vedner, son-in-laws Jesse Schwartz, Craig Walk and daughter-in-law Natalie Vedner. His siblings, two brothers Donald and Kenneth Vedner and a sister Donna Mae Weaver also survive him. A Celebration of Life Memorial Gathering for family and friends will be held on Friday, September 13, 2013 from 5:00-8:00 PM at the Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home, 5000 County Road 46A, Sanford, Florida. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Stephen Parks at Annunciation Catholic Church, 1020 Montgomery Road, Altamonte Springs, FL, Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 11:00 AM, with a reception immediately following.
