Korean War Airlift Veteran
Don left us on May 3, 2013 in his eighty- seventh year. He was predeceased by his parents Knox and Marjorie, his brother Jack and sister Betty Anne Ellis, two dear wives, Georgene Wright and Alison McConnell and his daughter Cynthia Ash. He is survived by his beloved wife Lioudmila (Olentchenko) MacLeod and his three dearly loved children; Cheryl Ann Beillard (Michel), Robert (Dora), Cathy Bartsch (Mark), his stepson Nikita Olentchenko, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also mourned by his sister-in-law Elinor MacLeod and his good friend Bill Chevrier.
Don was raised in Ottawa and attended Lisgar Collegiate. Following high school, Don worked in Ottawa for three years, then joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was selected for pilot training and received his wings in June 1950. Following graduation, he was posted to 426 (Transport) Squadron and flew in the Korean war airlift. He then served in Alberta, Nova Scotia, France and then back to Ottawa where he finished his 21 year career on 412 (V.I.P.) Squadron.
Don's second career was as an executive pilot, mainly with the oil industry in Calgary. After another 22 years of flying, he retired permanently in Ottawa.
Funeral service will be held at St. Luke's Anglican Church, 760 Somerset St. W., Ottawa at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 10 followed by a reception in the basement church hall.
Don's kindness and compassion for others as well as his sense of humour will be remembered fondly by his friends and family who ask that donations to a charity of their choice be made in his honour and memory in lieu of flowers.
