Barbara J. Miller, 90, of Midland, died Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014, at MidMichigan Stratford Village. She was born July 24, 1923 in Battle Creek. Her parents, Allen Begg and Francis Begg, had immigrated to Battle Creek from Scotland and England.

She met and married James H. Miller before he was off to the Philippines in World War II. Jim passed away in October 1990.

Barbara grew up in Battle Creek and graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1941.

Upon Jim's return from World War II, they lived their early years of marriage in Grand Rapids, where both of her children were born.

In 1957 they moved to Midland, where they owned and operated "Jim Miller's Men's Shop," at the site of the current Chemical Bank on Main St., for more than 25 years. Barbara assisted with the business as she raised her family and participated in community activities.

Barbara was a long term member of the Midland Hospital Auxiliary. She had many friends and enjoyed socializing. Her many activities included bridge club, sewing, square dancing and cooking. Her English ginger bread was famously enjoyed from coast to coast!

Barbara was a breast cancer survivor, which was a testament to her internal strength.

Barbara was a longtime active member of Chapel Lane Presbyterian Church. She was an avid reader and articulate beyond her education achievement level.

In her later years, she did additional retail work at Knepp's Department Store and J.C. Penney, both in Midland. After her husband's death, she resided at Riverside Place Apartments in Midland.

Surviving Barbara are two children and their spouses; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Her son, Dr. Michael J. Miller (Adrienne), formerly of Midland, now resides in Harbor Springs; and daughter, Mary E. Watson (Joseph), resides in San Jose, Calif.

In addition to her parents and husband, Barbara was preceded in death by two brothers, Dr. Allen Begg of Marshall and George Begg of Kalamazoo.

Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 24, 2014, at the Chapel Lane Presbyterian Church, 5501 Jefferson Ave. Dr. Rhonda M. Myers, Pastor, will officiate. Committal services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 25, 2014, in Midland Cemetery.

Barbara's family will receive friends at the church on Thursday, from 11 a.m. until the time of service.

Those wishing to give an expression of sympathy are encouraged to donate to the Chapel Lane Presbyterian Church or to their favorite charity. You may also consider a special act of kindness and love in her honor. www.waresmithwoolever.com
