On Tuesday, March 19, 2013, this world lost one of its finest, when Donald V. Witherell passed from this life to enter his eternal heavenly home, after a valiant battle with lung disease.
Don was born July 16, 1939, in Midland, to the late Vernon and M. Irene (Sian) Witherell. He attended Midland Public Schools and lived in the Midland area until he entered the military in 1957. He served in the U.S. Air Force
and retired as master sergeant in 1977 after 20 years of dedicated service. Don then joined the Martin Marietta Corp. in Midland and later in Manistee, retiring in 2001.
Don married the former Helen M. Beadle on Feb. 28, 1959. They enjoyed 54 wonderful years together, growing their family and experiencing military life, then, retirement.
During his retirement, Don volunteered at the Greendale Senior Center. He delivered Meals on Wheels for several years and helped with other events when needed. An avid country music fan, he enjoyed attending jamborees and concerts in the area. Don was known as being very committed to those he loved and never faltered in supporting his family and friends. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him endless joy. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his wife, Helen, he is survived by his children, Gloria (Richard) Carpenter of Ely, Nev., Craig (Charles) Witherell of Tucson, Ariz. and David (Racheal) Witherell of Woodward, Okla. Also surviving are grandchildren, Don (Selina) Mularz of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Tim (Ambrel) Burnett and Paul Burnett, both of Deer Lodge, Mont., Heather (Jason) Rowley of Ely, Nev., Katelyn Ulrich of Midland and Sharon Barcia of West Branch; five great-grandchildren; and twins expected in August; brothers, Randy (Bonnie) Wetherell of Sanford and Barry (Janice) Wetherell of Imperial, Mo.; sisters, Marlene (Delmer) Donahue and Sandra (Roger) Ellis, both of Midland, Barbara (Darnell) Fletcher of Bloomington, Calif. and Penny (John) Brown of Fontana, Calif. Not to forget, his ever present and beloved four-footed companion, Boo.
Per Don's request, cremation has taken place and a private family memorial service has been held. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorial contributions to Greendale Senior Services, 4011 W. Isabella Rd., Shepherd, MI 48883.
